Berlin was divided at the end of World War Two into East and West – and it was here that World War Three would be fought first. Uniting Berlin was perhaps the first priority of the Deutsche Demokratische Republik – the DDR.  As such, the majority of military forces committed to the operation would be East German – spearheaded by the 1st Motorized Rifle Division. They would be joined by the Friedrich Engels Guard Regiment and the Hugo Eberlein Guard Regiment. While primarily an East German operation, there were substantial Soviet Army forces present, like the 6th Separate Guards Motor Rifle Brigade – and not far off if needed, the 35th Motorized Rifle Division.  In addition, the Ministry for State Security had substantial forces ready to reclaim the great city for East Germany. To the Communists, the city would fall in hourse.

Standing against this massive force was the NATO forces in the city.  But these were also very powerful. From the Berlin Brigade of America, the Berlin Infantry Brigade of the United Kingdom, and the Forces Françaises à Berlin, the regular NATO forces were overstrength and well trained. There were 1000s of motivated West Berlin police forces also, while poorly armed, ready to fight back the invaders. They were prepared to stand for days against the powerful attack – stand but with no hope of relief.

Those that served in Berlin (on both sides) were a special breed like no others. This game will show that uniqueness as well as the strange myriad of forces that would fight for the street corners of Berlin.

The Enemy is at the Gates is a new game in the Company Scale Series using the new added rules to show this bitter battle in a way that has not been seen before. Highly playable but with an emphasis on command and equipment, CSS uses an chit draw system to create a test and challenging game to play, but also with new research, and plenty of historical narrative.
